An interesting example of the Six Million Jews mantra from over a year before World War Two started. It contains all the key words that appear to be the common thread running through these historical newspaper articles such as Palestine, suffered, solution, problem, persecuted etc.
The professor Brodetsky appears worthy of further investigation of which I will post later.

I’m curious, where do you think most of the Jews in the world lived in 1938?
Also, does that article mention only German Jews? Or, does this encompass other countries in Eastern Europe?

Ah, I see you would like me to fall into the demographics trap. Well as far as I can gather from the articles that I’ve read no one had a particularly accurate answer. There only seems to be estimates and oft contradictory. And as I imagine you are probably already aware of the discrepancies in the World Almanac figures from 1933 – 1948 and probably de-bunked them. Here’s a little one to mull over. It’s a piece from an article in

“It is pointed out that the largest Jewish community outside Palestine is in America which holds 6,000,000 Jews, or approximately half the Jewish world population. It is also the wealthiest Jewish community. No Jewish State could develop without the support and financial aid of the American Jewish community which is diametrically opposed to Communism.”
There it is again, 6,000,000 how odd. (Apologies if I appear sarcastic)

What “trap?” You do understand that most of the Jews in the world lived in Europe before the war and were centered in Easter Europe, right?

Why are you only using newspaper articles to figure this out?

Before the war there were around 15-16 million Jews living, with most of them centered in Europe. With about 5.5 million dying that means around 12 million would be alive, with about half of this in the US. This makes sense.
No offense, but, I’m going to ask again:
What books have you read on this subject and why do you center so much on newspaper articles? They can only say so much.

Again, no offence taken. On this specific topic I’ve read just a few from the Holocaust Handbooks range. Which books would you recommend I read?
I centre on the newspapers because I have access to resource that can be peer checked and I believe that the newspapers and media of the time played a huge early role in development the holocaust mythos. I do believe that a lot of what was published was black propaganda, much of it complete lies and some of it very subtle but very influential.

The issue with newspapers is the sensational aspect.
This is what I recommend:
Laurence Rees, Auschwitz, a New History
Christopher Browning Ordinary Men
Martin Winstone Dark Heart of Hitler’s Europe
Those are all relatively short. I then recommend David Cesarani’s The Final Solution and Christian Gerlach’s The Extermination of the European Jews.

Thank you for your recommendations. I’m widely read on WW II my main interest ironically is the British Infantry 1939-1946 and particularly the 21st Army Group of which I will not discuss on here.
